Croatian Marin Cilic clinched a second straight Chennai Open title on Sunday with a 7-6 7-6 victory over Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka. Second seed Cilic battled for two hours and 40 minutes to overcome the Swiss in a thrilling final to record his first win over the world number 21 in five meetings. "It was a big mental battle out on the court. He had some chances early on. I played well when I had to," Cilic told reporters. Third seed Wawrinka, the Beijing Olympics doubles gold medallist with Roger Federer, broke the big-serving Cilic in the eighth game of the first set to open up a 5-3 lead. Cilic, 21, broke back immediately with a series of powerful forehand winners and then levelled at five-all, thrilling a packed stadium crowd primarily cheering for the defending champion. He then won the first set tiebreak 7-2. "The two tiebreaks...it was important for me to win the first one to get the mental advantage as it had a lot of rallies, it had a lot of running, and the match went for almost three hours," said Cilic, who will next play in the Australian Open. "It wasn't easy to maintain yourself on the court all the time mentally and to stay focused. I am very pleased about, very happy about winning." Wawrinka, who had his neck treated for stiffness in the opening set, saved two break points in the eighth game in the second set before Cilic again won a tiebreak to take the title.

"For sure it's tough to lose a match on two tie-breaks," said Wawrinka who plays in Sydney next week. "Marin was better and deserved to win. Two tiebreaks is close, I hope the next time I can take it." © Copyright (c) Reuters An interview with Marin during last years French Open.
