Sandra Perković Wins Gold At European Championships In Barcelona

BARCELONA - Sandra Perkovic Croatian athlete Sandra Perkovic won a gold medal in the discus throw at the European Championships in Barcelona with a score of 64.67 meters and winning the first gold medal for Croatia in the history of the European championships.






The European junior champion from 2009 until the gold came in the last series of throws. Until then Romanian Nicoleta Gras (63.48) was leading. The third place was taken by Joanna Wisniewska from Poland(62.37).

The European junior champion from 2009 was not shining in the qualifying round and had a shot of 57.70 meters, barely reaching 12th best, but in the final she was great. In her first attempt she managed 62.98 meters, which secured her at least a silver in the finals.






Sandra has now won a third medal for Croatia at the European Championships, this edition being in Barcelona. The first ever was won by Branko Zorko at the 1,500 meters at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994. Zorko was third with a time of 3:36.88. Coming in behind the winner Spaniard Fermina Cache (3:35:27) and his compatriot Isaac Vicioso (3:36:01). Sinisa Ergotić won our second, a silver in the long jump at the European Championships in Munich in 2002. He did this with a jump of eight meters.
