Ivano Balić Proclaimed 'Best Handball Player of All-Time'

After voting results on the website of World Handball Federation, Croatian Ivano Balić is declared 'Best Handball Player of All-Time.


Ñow then....The question of "Who is the best handball player of all time?" on the International Handball Federation's (IHF) website was answered by nearly 11,000 visitors recently. After the results were tabulated, taking 48.7% of the vote was the 31 year old Croatian handball master who currently plays for Zagreb CO.

Born in Split, Ivano Balić won the World title in 2003, and became an Olympic champion in 2004. He also came in as a runner up in the World Championships in 2005 and 2009 as well as the European Championships in 2008 and 2010.

6 times in a row he was selected the best player for some of the biggest international tournaments in the world, and in 2003 and 2006 he was officially declared to be the world's best handball player.

He won by a considerable margin over Frenchman, and 5 years his junior, Nikola Karabatic, who today plays for Montpellier. He recieved 33.7% of the votes. Karabatic, the current European, World and Olympic champion, was declared the best handball players of the world in in 2007.

Third place with 16.5% of the vote was taken by Talant Dusebajev from Kyrgyzstan, who is now coach of the Spanish club Ciudad Real.

For Joachim Deckarm, the fact that he played in the international scene in the past didn't go too well, who recieved  only about two percent of the vote.

Ivano Balic is the king of handball – according to the users of Almost 11,000 website users took part in this voting – the question was “Who’s the best male handball player ever?” 48,7 % – almost one half – voted for the Croatian international, who became Olympic Champion 2004, World Champion 2003, runner-up at World (2005, 2009) and European Championships (2008, 2010) with his national team. On individual level, Balic (born in Split, current club RZ Zagreb) has been awarded World Handball Player of the Year twice (2003, 2006) and Most Valuable Player (MVP) at several major tournaments. He was a member of the all-star teams even more often.

 The center back player of Zagreb and Croatia outclassed Nikola Karabatic in the voting on The French back court player (World Handball Player of the Year in 2007, current title holder at Olympics, World and European Championships with France), who plays for the French club Montpellier, received 33,7 % in this voting. Karabatic is ahead of Talant Dushebajew (current coach of Spanish team Ciudad Real) with 16,5 %.

The Bosnian and former Yugoslavian player Svetlana Kitic had been voted best female player of all time by the users of before.

Ivano took it all in stride, adding that he was proud to have won, but was also thankful to his teamates and coaches as well as the voters. Ivano is currently playing for Zagreb CO. (His hair is still currently touching his ears btw)
