Blanka Sets Season High In Split...'VATRENI' Start Off On Right Track For EURO 2012...& More.....

It's been a busy week for Croatian athletes in world representation. Quite a bit of sports related items I wanted to touch upon, so here are just a  few of the highlights. Not much to add here. Blanka Vlasic just keeps on rollin'', making it look easy. This time at the Continental Cup competition in Split, her hometown. She won the event with a jump of 205 cm, which is also her season high and a new record for the Continental Cup. Footage of the her jump below.......

'Vatreni' Start Off Euro 2012 Qualifying Campaign With A Win In Latvia

The Croatian National Soccer Team (Vatreni) travelled to Riga, Latvia for the first match of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. It seems they've regrouped from their lacklustre play from the last World Cup qualifying schedule and did what had to be done, winning 3:0. Mladen Petrić, Ivica Olić and Darijo Srna did the goal scoring. They next play Greece on Tuesday at Maksimir Stadion in Zagreb.  Highlights of the match:

"Barracudas" Beat Italy To Advance To Semi-Finals at European Water Polo Championships in Zagreb

Also, it's been sort of a busy week for Croatian athletes in general, so just a couple more things worth mentioning...The European Water Polo Championships are taking place in the capital city of Zagreb.  The Croatian National Water Polo Team, aka "Barakude" (The Baracudas) reached the semi-final stage of the tournament with an 8:5 win over Italy. Footage of the match:

..The Croatian Under-21 National Soccer Team traveled to Serbia for an important match. It ended up a 2:2 draw, but the point was all that Croatia needed to clinch top of the group and advance to the playoff stage...

EUFA May Not Allow 100th yr Anniversary Hajduk Split Jerseys For Europa League Matches?

Boy, it seems the tentacles of anal retentiveness or just plain political correctness nit picking (Take your pick) is to be found everywhere these days. A 3 member delegation from the UEFA bigwigs came to Split's Poljud Stadion to inspect it for UEFA guidelines for an upcoming Europa League match later this month. Having made some extra improvements for the Continental Cup athletics competition, (See above) everything is in order. However, according to the strict UEFA rules, they may try to disallow Hajduk from playing in their 100th Anniversary jerseys. The jerseys include a verse from an excerpt of a popular well known Hajduk club cheer song embroidered in small gold lettering on the front and back: "Bili su bili vrhovi planina". (Which in the Split area dialect of Croatian means "The whites were the peaks of the mountains"). Hajduk will be filing a complaint that it is not a marketing/advertising slogan, but simply a verse from a club song, to celebrate the club's 100 year long history. The nickname of Hajduk for many decades already has also simply been "the whites/bili", because the club's home jerseys have always been predominantly white. They will host Anderlecht on September 30th and are hoping to be able to play in the anniversary jerseys instead of last year's edition....

....There's no word yet if UEFA is finding issues with other Hajduk Split media, advertisements or anniversay celebrations....I wonder if any of the UEFA people are from Cowtown or related to Jerry Fallwell? hmmm? (update: the match went ahead as scheduled with Hajduk Split winning 1-0 and the club was allowed to play wearing the anniversary edition jerseys)

Croatian Womens Water Polo Team Makes It's 1st Appearance On World Stage

Also worth mentioning, the Croatian Womens Water Polo Team (Sirene) made it's 1st ever appearance at a major world  tournament.  Being their first try, not surprisingly they didn't make a big impact, but it was a great learning experience and the main thing is the crowd in Zagreb had their own to root for in the women's division at the European Water Polo Championships.

2011 VIP Snow Queen Trophy On The Way

And lastly, perhaps off topic, but maybe not, the Alpine and Slalom ski season is just around the corner, and that means that the 2011 edition of the Zagreb Snow Queen Trophy is just around the bend also. The races take part at Slijeme, just outside of Zagreb. Anyway, I came across a couple of cool areal videos from this years event and thought it would be worthy of putting here. I especially like the 2nd video, a night time view, one of the few, perhaps only location on the World Cup circuit that has runs under the lights. I'm totally looking forward to cheering on Olympic medallist Ivica Kostelic this season as well as our other Croatian Mens and Womens skiiers.
