110 Croatian Athletes Heading To London 2012 Olympics

Today at the Westin Hotel in Zagreb, the first batch of athletes heading for the 2012 Summer Games in London got together for a meet and greet with the media. In total 110 athletes will be taking part in this summers Olympic Games. (108 + 1 reserve athlete per men's and women's handball team) competing in 18 sports. Ana Zaninovic, who is a gold medalist from the World Taekwondo Championships, was rumored to be the flag carrier at the opening ceremonies, then just recently however, it was announced that National Handball Team member Venio Losert will have the honor instead.

An almost guaranteed medal was lost when high jumper Blanka Vlašić had to pull out of the Olympics a while back, complications after surgery on her ankle, then today female tennis player (who's been playing solid lately upsetting Top 10 ranked players on the WTA and ATP tours)  Petra Martić had to pull out because of injuries as well as did tennis player Ivo Karlovic.  Just a few images from the day in Zagreb below.

*Note - For a more complete rundown of all the athletes traveling to London and which events they will compete in, click on the link below. Not to be forgotten, although medals are only counted since the demise of Yugoslavia, there have also been a number of Croatian champions and medalists from before the time Croatia became independent again in 1991. Dating back to before the 2 Yugoslavia's even, when at the time a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.  See : and

*Croatian athletes won 41 of the 83 Olympic medals awarded to Yugoslavia from 1920 to 1988. Since declaring independence in 1992, Croatia has won 27 medals. See:
