Edward Norton Vacationing In Hvar & Jeremy Irons Drops By In Dubrovnik.

There's plenty of this kind of celebrity stuff going on every summer in Croatia, nothing particularly groundbreaking, new or big news, but I'm a fan of these 2 actors, so I'm just quickly throwing this in.  Edward Norton vacationed on the island of Hvar recently, relaxing and staying away from the crowds for the most part. Then down the coast in the historic walled city of Dubrovnik, Jeremy Irons dropped by to take in the sights, food and drinks and to discuss future projects with Croatian media people for the next 2 days.  This his first time in Dubrovnik......

Update: July 21, 2012 -  2 time Academy Award nominee Ralph Feinnes also dropped by the coastal city of Pula.  He's in town to check out the 59th edition of the Pula Film Festival. (There are rumors of him being intrigued about a possible future project revolving around the events of the first ever documented case of a Vampire, Jure Grando, actually I just made that up, but he is really in Pula: www.24sata.hr)

A wonderful day yesterday, which was mostly spent on Palmižana with the Meneghellos, but also included a tour of Hvar's newest club Pink Champagne, and finished with taking the kids to an excellent play at the summer theatre in Stari Grad.

The highlight of a quality day was an excellent and extended meal with Dagmar Meneghello, who had invited me for lunch, as I met her for the first time. A very cultured lady, passionate about art and Palmižana, it was a privilege to listen to her stories over the last 47 years on the island. More about this in a subsequent blog.

Dagmar posted some pictures on my Facebook wall later, which I assumed would be a picture of our day together, but they turned out to be something altogether more interesting. As I was arriving, one very satisfied and relaxed guest was leaving - American actor Edward Norton, who seemed to enjoy the unique Meneghello formula.

And, as Edward's guest book comments noted, there is a great sense of family at Meneghello - both for the wider tourism family who visit regularly, and the extended Meneghello family - all eight grand children are currently there, spending the summer together, as they do every year. Edward wrote:

"Amici Palmizana/Meneghello,

What a wonderful island home. Better than any hotel... a real family. There's a wonderful spirit here. Hvala!"

It really is a special place - and very accessible from Hvar Town. Take the regular water taxi from the waterfront for 60 kuna return and enjoy a magical experience. Two of my fellow taxi passengers walked around the gallery and estate with eyes wide open.

"Wow," said one, "this is the most amazing place on Hvar."

Famous British actor and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons decided to visit Dubrovnik after the Sarajevo Film Festival with about 30 film professionals, among them actor Paul Brannigan, producer Andy Paterson and film director and producer Michelle Ohayon.

Irons stayed in Hotel Rixos Libertas and made a trip to the Elaphiti Islands with a private yacht. He complimented Croatia's beauty, it's warm and kind people, and fresh seafood, especially local oysters. He even considers buying property in Dubrovnik.

"Congratulations, I haven't seen any trash on this beautiful coastline!" says Irons, who is currently the protagonist and producer of the documentary movie "Trashed" that highlights solutions to the pressing environmental problems around the world. According to him, very few places on earth are protected from trash.

After an evening sail around Dubrovnik, a dinner was organized for the group in the newly opened restaurant "360° by Jeffrey Vella". The guests had the opportunity to try various delicacies of the modern Mediterranean cuisine from the menu that was specially designed for Jeremy Irons and the Sarajevo Film Festival guests.

Book your room at the Rixos Libertas Dubrovnik and stay where Jeremy Irons stayed!
