It's been a couple weeks since the end of the London Summer Olympics, but I said I was going to make a summary post after it was over....Overall it was a great showing and a successful conclusion for the Croatian athletes.  The best medal count yet, and they were very close to taking home even a few more. (Injured high jumper Blanka Vlašić would have been a sure bet for a medal too)  It was hoped a couple of medalists from the Beijing games would duplicate their success, but other medalists stepped in to help fill the void.  Of course some of Croatia's political leaders came to watch and cheer on at some of the events, even Slavica Ecclestone came to watch and support the Croatian waterpolo team, accompanied by Zlatko Mateša, who is President of the Croatian Olympic Committee)

Below is the basic summary.  The good news also  is that if you missed the Summer Games on TV, you can click on the "Watch on Youtube" link after starting the video and be able to watch the various matches and competitions in full replay.....

*(As a sidenote, Croatia's Under-18 Basketball squad  took the title of European Champions recently,  more info about that HERE)

108 (or 110; with one reserve player per men's and women's handball team) Croatian athletes secured a spot at the 2012 Summer Olympics in 17 sports, making it the largest Croatian Olympic team in history.
Sports in which the Croatian athletes competed were: athletics, basketball, canoeing, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, handball, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

The 2012 Olympic Games were ultimately the most successful Olympics in modern Croatian history. The highest numbers of gold medals at Summer Olympics was achieved (Croatia also won three medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics). Also, the highest number of medals at Summer or Winter Olympics was achieved (six medals), surpassing the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

However, before the Games, it was suspected that Croatia could win at least eight medals, but this was not achieved. Tonči Stipanović, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić and Snježana Pejčić were in very good positions to win a medal, however, they ended up in 4th, 5th and 5th position, respectively. Šime Fantela and Igor Marenić were favourites to win a medal in the 470 class in sailing, however, they finished in 6th place. Croatia also achieved their best ever medal rank at the Summer Olympics (25th position), but did not surpass the 2002 Winter Olympics when Croatia finished in 12th place.
