Croatian Teenager Wins Contest To Design Mark Webber Formula-1 Helmet

This is a short feel good story, good for her. Seems like the 17 year old from the city of Bjelovar has her  designing career off to a good start.  Just goes to show you'll never know if you don't try....

A young talented Croatian artist from the town of Bjelovar has won over Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, writes daily newspaper 24sata.

"I saw on Twitter that Mark Webber was having a competition to design a helmet which he would wear in a race in Singapore. As I like to draw and paint, and especially design, I entered the competition. I didn't even dream that my design would be the best out of 1,118 designs," said 17-year-old music student Zlatka Suboticanec.

Suboticanec could not believe it when she found out the news that her design was the winner. Her prize was a trip to the Singapore Formula 1 race. Zlatka's father Zlatko will travel with her to the race.

"I am especially happy that after the race Webber will take off his helmet, which I designed, and hand it to me. I will remember that moment for the rest of my life," said an excited Suboticanec.

Webber, who drives for the Red Bull team, loves the young Croatian's design. "I am very happy. Energy, Australian flag, my caricature...it all looks brilliant," commented Webber.

We have a winner! Two months after Mark Webber put out a call to his fans to design a new helmet for him, the Red Bull Racing star has picked out the above design to wear at the Singapore Grand Prix.

From crayon scrawls to polished professional designs, there was a huge range of style and creativity posted on Mark's AussieGrit page on Facebook.

Mark reviewed all 1,118 designs to find a helmet that he would be proud to wear over the course of a race weekend and Aussie Grit is thrilled to announce the winner of the competition is Zlatka Suboticanec, a 17-year-old fan from the city of Bjelovar in Croatia.

Mark said: “Zlatka’s design was full of energy and really caught my attention with the unique inclusion of the Australian flag into the colour scheme. I’m also pretty impressed with the cartoon version of me on the back, although he has a few less wrinkles than me...

“I’m truly blown away by the number of people that have put in such a huge amount of effort in this promotion. We have had entries from all over the world, from young and old and from all types of artistic talents! It was amazing to see all of the designs that the fans came up with and I’m really thankful for their efforts.”

Zlatka has won a ticket to the Singapore Grand Prix on September 23 to watch Mark wearing the custom-designed helmet on the track.
